Movies and Student Ministry

A little bit ago I had a great opportunity to participate with another ministry for an outreach focused youth event.  It was a great event and considering I wasn’t responsible for anything, it was kinda nice to just be there with kids and hang.

Even though the event was awesome with tons of fun and a gospel proclamation, I was bothered by one thing that happened during the night.

2014_guardians_of_the_galaxy-wideIn one of the rooms for this event they showed a few different movies during the night.  One of the movies shown was “Guardians of the Galaxy”.  Although I enjoyed watching it myself, I did notice how it had its fair share of cursing and sexual references to it.  In addition, they had the subtitles on during the movie which only drew more attention to the inappropriate references and words.

I know that it was an outreach event, but it is something I would not have personally shown at a youth event I was in charge of.  There are plenty of movies out there that students love that would have been more appropriate than “Guardians of the Galaxy” was.

What would you do?  And, what are your standards for showing movies at student ministry events? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Tom, I haven’t seen the movie, but from what you said about it, in my opinion it’s not really appropriate to show it in a youth event. Like you said, there are plenty other movies out there to pick from with a great message.
