Going the extra mile
What have you done lately to go the extra mile in life or ministry?
In my past ministry experience, I have found that not going the extra mile is really taking the easy way out is. See, it’s easy to do everything the way it used to be or to not think outside the box on what could make an event extra special. It’s easy to skip over steps that might put the finishing touch on a prop or talk illustration.
At New Life, we just finished up an “at the movies” series. Taking the easy way out would have been for us to entitle the series and come up with a nice powerpoint slide with a movie reel on it. But New Life went the extra mile and did some really cool things like this picture below. Not only did we have a cut out replica made up of the Oscar statues posted at each end of the stage but we also:
- had huge replicas of a skittle box put up by stage and a popcorn replica in the lobby
- made fresh popcorn served at the beginning and end of the service (the kids loved that)
- had tickets made up for the church members to give to their friends who don’t go to new life as an outreach opportunity
- had movie posters posted up around the lobby of the movies we were covering in the series
- used clips from each movie as a visual in the message
These were steps that we took to go the extra mile with the “at the movies” series so it was not just another sermon series. People went the extra mile and put a lot of time and effort into make this series special.
So again I ask, what have you done lately to go the extra mile in life or ministry? TAKE A MINUTE and think about some upcoming talk series or event you have coming up. What can you do today that will help you go the extra mile and make a it more than just average?
