Leaders vs. Managers
Earlier in the Fall, our Executive Pastor shared this comparison between Leaders and Managers with the New Life staff. This is what it says.
Leaders tend to:
- Stress relationships, principles, values and commitment
- Create and articulate a vision
- Move the organization in new directions. Prefer adaptive change
- Are unsatisfied with the status quo
- Communicate purpose, urgency and vision
- Favor taking risks and making changes
- Generate a feeling of meaning in work, it’s value and importance
Managers tend to:
- Stress organization, coordination and control
- Focus on short term achievement
- Concentrate on maximizing results from existing systems. Prefer operational change.
- Communicate directives
- Fear uncertainty and act cautiously
- Enforce fulfillment of agreements/contracts
So which one are you? Are you a leader or a manager? Is one better than the other? TAKE A MINUTE and process this out and post a comment what your opinion is. I’d love to get a good chat going about this and which one a Student Ministry Director needs to be.
