What makes you an expert?
Moving into my 15th year of full-time youth and family ministry, I began to wonder, what makes someone an expert in their field? Are you an expert if you work over a certain number of years at 1 particular church? What if you write a book or have one of Youth Cartel’s top 25 Youth Ministry blogs? Does that make you an expert? Are you a wiser veteran if you have gray hair, a seminary degree or a white collar around your neck?
What is it that makes someone an expert in their field where others can learn from them and where their “voice” is worth listening to? And, does it even matter?
Thoughts? Comments? Post them here.
obviously you aren't an expert yet. even with 15 years of experience. if you want to be considered an expert in youth ministry, according to the list, you have to be out of the youth ministry game for at least a decade 🙂
tom, you are the man, a gifted and godly pastor who faithfully serves your church and community. 15 years proves that you know what you are doing and an expert in my book. i hope more and more people seek your advice and support.
blessings!!
haha, agreed Ben. Tom, I'd consider you an expert, like Ben said above, your years of experience show that.
You ask "what makes it to where others want to listen to your voice as an expert?" In my mind, its easier to listen to those who are experts and dont act like it, still question things, still learn, and dont come off as knowing everything.
Inspired by your milestone.
Great comments Ben and Ben. I agree that those who are still learning and never acting like they know it all are the ones that I want to listen to and inspire me as well. For the record, love what both of you are doing…you all inspire me and give me more than enough to chew on each time you post.
