“One Question that Can Make Every Event Better” Notes
These are my notes from the “One Question that Can Make Every Event Better” Breakout session at the Orange Conference 2020. Trey McKnight led this breakout.
The question is….”What’s next?”. What happens when that student leaves the event? What happens when they go back to life? What is next?
Develop an overall strategy that fosters deeper and more meaningful relationship with leaders and peers for the sake of discipleship.
How does this event help move to the next step?
The big event should not be the main event.
What’s next for students?
- How can this event best lead to the transformative understanding of identity, purpose and belong?
- Relationships. Small groups is where the big impact happens. Every step of what you do in the “big room” at your event should be a setup for what happens in the small room. The small group is your arena for the victories and defeats. Small groups are for every student.
- We have to be prepared to walk with students when they decide to follow Jesus.
- Celebrate the decision
- Prepare them what they may experience next (rejection, gain friends, make difficult decisions)
- Join them. You don’t have to have all the answers but you have to walk with them on their journey.
What’s next for leaders?
- Invest in leaders. The leaders are your extension of influence.
- Inspire them. Share the what and why of each event. Repeat the why over and over again.
- Equip them. Give them the tools they need to carry on the conversation. Give them the heads up about what is happening and topics being discussed.
- Communicate regularly.
What’s next for parents?
- Every event for your event should set your parents up for the win. (what’s coming before the event, what’s happened during the event, what to expect after the event)
- Parents play such a huge significant roll in the discipleship lives of students.
- You can never over-communicate to parents.
- It’s not their job to engage with ministers. It’s our job to engage with parents.
Jesus put on a lot of events in his life. Whenever he showed up people were there listening. Those massive events were rarely ever the main event for Jesus.
