The Monday Morning Debrief: Casey Anthony

In case you missed it, Casey Anthony the mother and primary suspect of murdering her 2 year old daughter 3 years ago, was acquitted in an Orlando court this week.  This sparked tremendous outrage everywhere as many believed Casey killed her daughter.  To read an article about the acquittal you can check out the AP article here.

So how does this apply to ministry? Here’s how.

Do you talk about current events much in your program and in your times with students?  Now I know that we need to be planners and it is ideal that we have a certain Truths we communicate to the students.  However, we should also be prepared to address current issues and topics that are very relevant to their lives.  This story alone presents many teaching opportunities:

  • death
  • dealing with tragedy
  • dealing with hard situations
  • unplanned pregnancies and the affect it has on families (abstinence)
  • life being unfair
Again just a few topics I brainstormed real quick, but the point being is that we should take advantage of current events and use them to TRUTH about Christ and who He is to those we are reaching out to.
So my encouragement is to each day or even each week, TAKE A MINUTE and review the current events that are happening.  What are they and how can you help students process them in the light of Christ?
Thoughts, comments or questions?  Post a comment or 2 so that we can all discuss and process together.
