the BLACKBOARD: “Rise of the Guardians” Ministry Opportunity

Over the Thanksgiving Break, I took my girls to go see “Rise of the Guardians” movie.  Without giving away too much of the plot, it is a simple good vs. evil plot with the Guardians protecting children against Pitch (aka the Boogie Man).  The key is that Pitch is trying to make children around the world NOT believe in Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny and if they don’t believe they won’t be able to protect the children anymore.  Thus Pitch can unleash terror onto all the children.

As I was watching this, I thought that this is a great movie to watch with students in your youth program (as I watched it with my girls) because afterwards, it can lead to a great discussion with them. It provided me with so many opportunities to talk with my girls about what we really believe (mine still believe mostly in Santa and I’m good with that), who our REAL guardians are (Christ) and what do we do when we are afraid.  I didn’t instigate this conversation at all, it just came up naturally.

This wasn’t necessarily a great movie and one to go back to over and over again.  But it did provide some great opportunities to talk about Christ and so because of that, I would recommend it.  But it’s not the only movie you could watch with students that could lead to discussion.  There are others.  So, right now, TAKE A MINUTE and not only think of opportunities you have in the upcoming days/weeks to see “Rise of the Guardians” with some youth in your group, but think of other movies on DVD or Netflix that you could watch with students that would accomplish the same thing as “Rise of the Guardians”.  Post what those movies are so that we can all enlarge our ministry movie list.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Ministry Movie idea?  Post a comment so we can all benefit from it.
