Who are you Drafting this Year for Your Ministry Draft?

This weekend was the NFL Draft! The Draft happens once a year and is a time of hope for the players and the teams that are drafting them. There is so much optimism in the air that these persons the team drafts can bring added value to the team in their quest for a Championship.

While there is so much hope and excitement on draft day, there is also a lot uncertainty. Every year there is at least one draft bust. It is anyones guess if these players will actually work out or not. That is why teams spend so much time looking at the player’s game film, interview countless players, coaches, families and do a ton of background research into their lives. Teams want to do any and all evaluations to make sure that they know everything about the person.

This brings me to ministry. In many ways there should be Ministry Draft Day each year for your Church or ministry. It’s the time of year where ministries evaluate where they are and the type of people and resources they need on their ministry team to help propel their ministry to another level. Then, they go out and look for people who would be ideal to fulfill those positions. Evaluate where they are spiritually, what gift set they have and would they be a great fit for that particular ministry team. This could be done as a whole Church team or individual ministries.

ministry draftI know it may sound odd, but have a draft day for your ministry. Take time to scout out to be potential volunteers and leaders within your Church or in your community to help you in ministry in the future. Do research. Ask around which people would be ideal candidates for your ministry positions. Then, after all the research is done on your part, invite this person(s) to be part of your ministry and go through the process of being a leader.

The reality is that you may not need to do a “draft day“ for your ministry but now is the perfect opportunity for you to be looking, evaluating and asking people to consider serving alongside you. They can be either new volunteers or new leaders within your organization that can help you take that next step in your ministry. Maybe you could do a brainstorming session with your current volunteers to see who else you all can bring in and “draft“ for the coming year. The more research and processing you can be doing now on who can and should be a leader in the upcoming year will help you best minister for your Church or ministry.

What do you think? How do you recruit new leaders to support the ministry? Do you do a ministry draft? Share your thoughts, experiences and questions below or on social media using #ymsidekick when you share. Let’s continue this conversation.
