The reality is most of us fail in our resolutions – just 8% of people actually achieve their New Years goals.

If you want to be successful this year and make some of your resolutions happen, it all depends on how SMART you are.  No, not your intelligence smart (although that does help) but how you use S.M.A.R.T. Goals to achieve your resolutions.

images-6Specific – what is it that you really want to accomplish?  Be as specific as possible so that you know whether or not you’ve hit your goal/resolution or not.  The more specific the better.

Measurable – as the old saying goes, if you don’t have a target, you hit everything…or nothing.  The reality is you have to have something to measure your success by.  If you don’t measure it you’ll never know if you hit your target or not.

Achievable – too many times we shoot for the moon with our goals thinking I’m make a goal so big it will give me extra motivation to achieve it.  That may be the case…for a time, but honestly if you don’t start getting close to the moon, eventually you will become discouraged and lose motivation.

Realistic – notice it says realistic.  That means, as with achievable, don’t shoot for the moon but it also doesn’t say simple.  Make them challenging but make the realistic to achieve.

Timely – put a date in which you want this goal to be achieved by.  I love timely goals because it keeps me focused.

Put all these together and you can make some specific goals that are realistic and hold you to accomplishing them within a specific time.  I don’t know about you but the more specific, realistic and timely they are, the more likely I am going to be able to fulfill my goal and resolution.

When when you resolve to do something this year, resolve to do it with S.M.A.R.T. goals and I’m very certain you’ll hit a higher success rate than in years past.
